Where to walk your dog in Manchester

Walking your dog in Manchester means knowing the city’s dog control orders: where leads are required, where dogs can’t go and what you risk if you don’t pick up. And so you don’t have to walk alone, Wouf & Go shows the walks other owners organise near you or anywhere in Manchester.

Where to walk your dog in Manchester

Parks and open spaces

The council’s orders require dogs on leads on roads, pavements and in cemeteries across the city, and in specified areas such as certain parks and picnic areas. Elsewhere in the parks, check the signs at the entrance before letting your dog off.

Play areas and sports facilities

The same orders keep dogs out of certain children’s play areas and sports facilities. Plan your route so the group doesn’t have to cross them.

Walking several dogs

No one may take more than four dogs into a public place at once. That matters for group walks too: each owner walks their own dogs.

Rules to know before you go

  • Pick up after your dog everywhere, and carry enough bags to show you can.
  • Keep your dog on a lead on roads, pavements and in cemeteries, and wherever signs require it.
  • Put your dog on a lead when an authorised officer asks.
  • Keep dogs out of the children’s play areas and sports facilities covered by the orders.
  • Breaking the orders can mean a £100 fixed penalty notice, or a fine of up to £1,000 if prosecuted. The current orders run until 25 July 2028.

Before you set a meeting point

Choose a park entrance or landmark everyone can find, and say whether the walk stays on lead. If several owners bring more than one dog, remember the four-dog limit per person. Bring water and bags, and plan a shorter loop for a first meet.
